Detecting Child Abuse
On the way back from Austin this weekend a friend of mine and I discussed children. Sadly it’s impossible to speak of children without mentioning abuse. We both spoke of cases we knew personally. Today I decided to look at the stats.ÂÂ
”-1,500 children die from abuse each year, 140,000 injuries to children from abuse each year, about 1 in 4 women in North America were molested in childhood,1 in 7 males molested before 18, estimated 150,000 to 200,000 new cases of sexual abuse occur each year, estimated 903,000 victims of maltreatment nationwide.”
An estimated 1,100 children died of abuse and neglect, a rate of approximately 1.6 deaths per 100,000 children in the general populations.”22 -Mental Health Journal, April, 2001
If you know 4 children there’s a probability that one of them are being abused. This includes your own. There is a way to help. Know the signs. Please take time and read this website. It could save a child’s life.
